Because if he admitted it was bad, then he would have to accept the blame for his boneheaded economic policies. It would also reflect badly on his party, which already has enough trouble.

I don't think Bush really thinks it is going well. He has to talk up the bright points to keep consumer confidence up. If he admits it is not doing well people will cut back on their spending and could actually prolong any recession. It would also give fodder for democrats to insist that his tax cuts have not had the long term economic effects that he predicted and could aid in their repeal. By talking up the economy he is hoping that we can again spend our way out of the problem rather than address the underlying weaknesses of our economy.

That's too easy. Just look at the profits of Haliburton, Exxon/Mobile, Blackwater, etc. That's all Bush looks at.

I'm with Crabby on this, his wallet is looking all good with his corps. The rest of the US is suffering but when did he ever look at the big picture?

For the folks who responded and feel the USA is in bad shape I ask the following:

What is the basis of how you "feel" abut the current sate of our economy?

Is it perception? Is it information you hear in the news or from friends? Is it actual facts you compile? Tea leaves?

Well, George said on television the other day that the economy was "safe and secure". What he really meant was that HIS (personal) economy was safe and secure.

As far as OUR economy, I think we're pretty much screwed, unfortunately. =/
