What you are calling a skip (if its a newer car) is probraly the fans kicking on or your ac pump kicking in or just one of your sensors readjusting the idle speed. More noticable on smaller engines in larger cars.

Depends on what u mean by "skip". It could be anything from bad fuel, clogged fuel filter, bad plug wires.
When our Honda started skipping, turns out it was a cracked spark plug.

Water in your gas, dirty fuel injector nozzles, motor running too cold, incorrect spark-plugs or ignition wires gaining ohms of resistance, cracked ignition wire boots, moisture inside the distributor (if you have one), crack in the distributor cap, rotor burn through, loss of compression, worn cam lobes, stuck piston rings, low fuel pressure, plugged fuel filter, carburetor (If you have one) problems, rusted fuel line, leaking fuel line, pluged gas tank sock, plugged air cleaner low voltage avalable to your ignition system and alternator not recharging 13.5 -14.0 volts.

the timing belt skipping a tooth?my old toyota did that. still ran, but badly. had it fixed and it ran like a champ again. :o)

Maybe you mean "miss"? If so, a miss can be caused by old spark plug wires.
