Depending on the changes that need to be made really determines that answer.
If you payoff credit cards or other accounts in good standing, you can improve your score literally overnight.
If on the other hand your score has been damaged by delinquencies, only time will heal the pain. Generally speaking, if you get all of your accounts current and keep them current, you'll see an immediate improvement once there is a 3 month history, 6 month, 12 month 24 month and then from there they really don't affect your credit too much unless it's something big like a foreclosure, bankruptcy or repo.

there are over 1,700 items that go into your credit score
so - here are some ideas
steady job
pay all accounts on time - full payment - and pay them OFF
(I pay my credit card off every month 1 day early)
do NOT apply every week (or month) for a new card - makes you look desparate for credit
I have written to the "big three" and told them NOT to allow phishing through my files - YOU have Qualified for OUR CARD!!! no kidding - at 805 I can pick and choose
and by the way - my credit card has 21% interest
interest in 2 years = $0 (because I pay it off each month)
AND it is a bonus card
1% cash back on all purchases
and
5% on pharmacy - gas - groceries
(have made $350 on it!)
love my gas station "Save 4 cents a gllon when you pay cash or use OUR gas card!"
yeah - I get 15 cents on $3.00/gallon gas - so I pay $2.85
KEEEP your 4 cents!!!!
If you cannot afford it - do not buy it
all the best

If you are carrying credit card balances, pay them off and only charge what you can afford to pay in full every month. That will quickly improve your score.
If you've had delinquencies, only time will heal. You'll need at least 24 months of on time payment history.
