..that in 20+ years, there'll be a generation of people who'll be convinced the "good old days" of music were the early 2000s when we had "classics" like Fergie, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Fall Out Boy, MCR, Ashlee Simpson & disposable Idol winners??

I mean they didn't *ask* to be born when they were, so their aesthetics of music will differ, but man, compare Fergie to....Janis Joplin

sweetwaters-

Apples & oranges, dude. Find me a comparable female entertainer from Chopin's day & then we can compare.

Jake-- Just Youtube any Ashlee tune. You'll get a good idea of what the whole package is.

Yeah, people have def' said the same, but I think we have the advantage of hindsight to be able to make an educated guess about these current acts. Using the Beatles as an example, they gained a much wider audience just a few years after the early "Beatlemania" years. By the time of the breakup, I think even the early nay-sayers owned up to them.

I don't have children, but I try my hardest to expose my nieces and nephews to true rock when I can, I try to have them appreciate when music was good. I can only hope by some miracle things will turn around again and there will be a rebirth of rock. Long Live Rock!!!!!!!!!

- Cycle of life, my friend -- If I knew then what I know now, oh the things I could have accomplished >:-) ...and yes, it is a bit scary getting older, regardless of the issues, but it is adaptable territory.
- That's what makes musical History and Discussion Groups so much (even more so, when you have an open mind to others).
- Just think of History in general -- a couple of Centuries from now, the 20th Century may appear as Barbaric as the 18th does to us (If Humankind is still here, that is).
- I remember in 1972, how "OLD" and "dated" I thought the British Invasion was, and that was less than a decade before -- Now, I look back and the music that I think is most pertinent to me, is 30 yrs old!! -- But I do respect and keep an open-mind to Modern Music. I guess, it is all relative to the individual perspective, I guess. Which to me means, that their is no "right" or "wrong" answer, opinion, or way of life.

I doubt I'll be looking back on these days and be saying the "good old days of music". I'll probably be talking about the good old days when I wasn't alive yet...
And if I were to look back on the "good old days" it would be for the indie scene.

And yes, it is scary. Very scary.

:0 o

But I hope the MCR and Fergie stuff is like the BSBs of the 90;s. Famous but utterly embarrassing, and are seen as the follies of youth.

EDIT:
Jake: The only Ashlee Simpson song I know is Pieces of Me cause she was caught lip syncing it on SNL....

It IS a scary thought Fonzie, & I'm sure there will be hoards of teenagers who think that they're retro-cool because they listen to Fergie and the like.

But, just like I'm living proof of, I'm sure there will be some who will look back farther than the 2000s and appreciate the music of the 60s-90s, so there's hope!

*Regains breath* Bloody oath. I'd never really thought of that until now. This is horror movie material! However, I was born long after many of the bands I listen to formed or broke up; there will always be people who appreciate good music. Good music never dies. I think Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, The Beatles etc are proof of that.

**Removes paper bag from mouth**

Fonzie......man its scary. I can just imagine now that in 10 years, my kid is going to sit there and make fun of the music I grew up with. Its sad now that the music I listened to growing up is on the oldies station....I'm only 24! Its sad when they're playing Blind Melon or Nirvana on them.

Its sad that many of the great musicians of the 00s will probably be eclipsed by the commericialize watered down versions of artists that we have today. Will they remember good bands like Jane's Addiction, Deerhoof or Wolfmother? Probably not........its sad when they'll compare Green Day to, well, any of the greats

Actually, I don't believe they have the capacity and depth to appreciate music that has staying power and artistry behind it, so I don't think they'll even really notice what they were listening to. That was a clumsy way of saying that this stuff is totally disposable, so their fans will fade like the music.

Nooooooooooooooooo!
Don't go scaring me at this hour on a Wednesday morning, Fonzie!

For me, the 'Good Old Days' of music were the 1960's - 1980's. No one will ever convince me otherwise.

Hopefully, I'll be able to pursuede my own kids to tell the difference between *good* music, and mindless rubbish.

it does scare me (except for the MCR part they don't belong in that category) but i have sat down and thought. omg in the future what if todays generation doesn't remember the greats like beatles, queen, iron maiden, the clash, the ramones, the who, the strokes, led zeppelin. and it dies out and just becomes history. will there still be fans? or will there only be people listening to crappy music with crappy lyrics. all i know is that i'll still love the old bands.

Oh my God... that is some scary stuff...
Well.. we do have some good music that will be amazing to look back on like.... hmm... well definitely not Fall Out Boy and that crap but good stuff like Lamb of God hahaha
I'm sorry to anyone who likes her but Fergie freaking sucks so bad... and the other bands aren't even real music...
this honestly does make me kinda sick I'm scared to hear the stuff that our grandchildren will be listening to
