i bought a car on thursday from a person, took it to a mechanic today and found out it has a blown head gasket. the person said they bought the car at auction and it had a "greenlight guarantee" on the drive train.

they dont know what this means but they are trying to look into it for me.

does it mean they will buy the car back or will it be repaired for free or cheaper than it should cost. does anyone know? please help!

Green light means that the car is free of major mechanical defects, and if there are certain issues that are found buy the buyer within the specified period of time, the deal can be arbitrated and the buying dealer may not have to go through with the deal.

Usually the buyer has 1 hour after the vehicle is sold on the block to put in an arbitration claim. Some auctions have programs where they will inspect the car and give a 7 or 14 day limited warranty on certain vehicles!

These issues are between the auction and the dealer! Did the dealer who sold you the car give you a warranty, or was the car sold as is? If there is a warranty, the dealer is responsible for fixing the car! If it was as is, he has no responsibility to fix it, and is trying to help you by seeing if he can get the repair covered anyway!

Most likely the auction is not going to fix the car! If you bought it as is, you will end up paying for the repair! You should have the car checked out PRIOR to purchase!

The car may still be ok. We have a vehicle with a check engine light that's been on for some time because a valve that has to do with emissions is stuck in an open position. This doesn't affect the performance of the car. Unfortunately, you may just need to take this as a lesson learned to check for the black tape. If I were you, I'd give the owners a call and nicely tell them that you noticed that the light was on and wondered if they had found out why. It could be that there's a sensor issue or something that happened years ago and the light being on all the time bothered them so they taped over it. I did the same thing in an old vehicle and if I had sold it I may very well have forgotten that I had done that.

Means a 30 minute or 60 minute guarantee on the motor, transmission, and rear end. Gives you just enough time to test drive it around the block. After the time limit there is no warranty. (leave it to us pros to deal with the auctions)
