Water is broken up into three different components:
-- The H+ ions are kept and used to generate ATP and eventually build glucose.
-- The electrons are used to replace lost electrons in photosystem II.
-- The oxygen is not needed in photosynthesis, so it diffuses out of the chloroplasts as a waste product.
