If you share folders or documents, then people on the same network as you (same router) or someone with your IP will be able to see those files. If you however dont have anything in your shared folders or you dont even share folders, then they cannot see anything.
If you are conerned about people viewing your files you can just disable file sharing, see the second link

If you have a router, and it is configured correctly, it is difficult for anyone to even see your machine, let alone access it.
If you connect your computer directly to your modem, then yes, is some cases your shared folders could be remotely accessed
Go to GRC,Com and run ShieldsUp. It's a quick an easy check of how easy it is to find and access your system.

Without a good firewall or some other form of protection - yes, they can especially if you haven't set proper passwords for your accounts. The below article might help explain why.
There are more complex answers to that question based on current security vulnerabilities - but just suffice to say that if someone wants to get into your system they probably can. If you're concerned, get a tech savvy friend to tighten your security for you! :)

On a local network they can see your shared folders, on the internet usually NO, unless you have some sort of program installed that makes your computer visible to others or your computer is infected by a worm/virus. If in doubt run a virus scan program.

If you are talking about with in the network,
yes they can access to your drive, with the IP Address.
if you configure the firewall & profile, they won't able to access to your documnets.
if you are talking about remotely, if you give the permission they access your computer.
even in network, you can share your computer through "Netmeeting", even here you have to accept the invitation.
so pls. configure your firewall in your computer.
