It's informative what people carry. Often, what they have at hand will relate to and issue they are dealing with.

Schoolwork is a good indicator of how a person is doing. Is it neat?, complete?, organized? Have the grades gone up or down?

Finally, it's a good ice breaker. You ask to see something and use it to begin a conversation. If you're feeling shy, then it may be a way to have you open up.

Next time bring in an object that will let you talk about a topic you've chosen. Rather then feeling intimidated, you now have control of the conversation.

Everything psychiatrists ask are ways of figuring you out. Don't feel intimidated, just tell him that it's nothing or you don't want him to see it.
I've figured out not cooperating with them is the best thing to do. I don't know this in your case, but you could give it a try.

Have you been violent in the past (toward self or others), or has someone reported to him that you have violent tendencies? If so, the doctor could simply be taking some basic safety precautions.

It is more likely, however, that he is just trying to connect with you or to get a conversation started in a more comfortable way (e.g., talk about your schoolwork or whatever you have with you at the moment).

First you need to understand YOUR psychiatrist is working for you, attempting to help you become the person you want to be.
You must open yourself up, and share yourself.
