I just learned from someone who worked there that Borders (and probably other big book chains) don't recycle their outdated magazines. It makes me sad and mad both! You'd think that by now it'd be a no-brainer.

And I can say from my own past employment experience that Bath and Body Works recycles its cardboard cartons but not any of its plastic shipping material.

Doesn't this bother anybody who can do something about it?

I think that one person doing something will make a small difference, but if the big companies changed their policy, it would make a bigger dent in the state of things. Complacency is dangerous.

That makes no sense to me either - as many places will either take the recycled material away for free, or PAY you for it...

This is especially true when it comes to Manufacturing facilities that produce a LOT of waste - they have to pay someone to take the trash away, and they don't (or MAKE money) by recycling. Perhaps someone has to spell it out this way in order to get them to change their ways.

Sadly, the Almighty Dollar wins out in the end - with laziness coming in a close second...

That's not true about it costing more money to recycle items. I think that EVERYONE should recycle. I hate it when people throw glass and plastic bottles in the trash as well as aluminum cans. I recycle I live in a community where recycling is mandatory. I agree with you I think it makes a big difference in the world even if one person recycles.

actually, no. it doesn't bother me because it often takes more resources and money to recycle than it does to make new stuff.

what i don't like is waste. most times, when i move, i go to stores and ask to use the boxes they'll throw away. i also take my back issues of magazines to my hairdresser for his waiting room. perhaps you could come up with some ways to reuse items in your world and let the big companies handle their business.
