I am in 100% in agreement with you. We are a materialistic society. As far as I'm concerned...Christmas is dead. It is all about the shopping. Its like a sickness, too. I recently received a Christmas list from my 2 sisters....I mean seriously, they gave me a list...That is like demanding a present and they are all gift cards or Coach purses! It is not only rude but sad.

I've found the best way to Christmas shop and it's called gift cards. I just get the relatives a gift card at a store they frequent and let them buy their own crap at their leisure. I have two kids and we do shop for them, but that usually only takes a weekend because they point out everything they want on TV months before Christmas, so we just have to pick it up at Toys R Us. For the adults and older kids though, the gift card is the way to go. I actually request a gift card as a gift too becasue I got tired of getting pajamas and house shoes every year. With a gift card, I can buy what I want when I want it.

You can develop any attitude you choose to about Christmas. Many people don't care for all the spending and gift-giving. Why don't you and your wife discuss developing some Christmas traditions of your own that are special to you. You can get a lot of enjoyment out of Christmas by involving yourself in other activities. Some traditions my family had included going to the woods to cut a tree and other greens to make wreaths that we delivered to the grandparents before Christmas. We also made homemade ornaments, and cookies on at least two weekends, we boxed them up and took them to friends.
On Christmas eve we took a thermos of cider and drove around to look at various light displays then returned home to cook seafood, lobster, clams etc...that was our traditional dinner. On Christmas day we tried to figure out the clues left in our stockings that told us where our gift was hidden. After dinner we played scrabble and other games with the kids.
We tried to focus on simpler things that were fun and kept us in the Christmas spirit. Plus if you do some shopping early in the fall, you can avoid all the rush.

I don't like the Christmas shopping thing either, I hate the crowded malls, can't stand that Wal*Mart starts Christmas in August and wish most of the time they'd shove all the sales etc where the sun doesn't shine. I'll stick with pointing and clicking from my computer.

Lol, my wife hates shopping period.
The trick to avoiding the christmas is to shop prior. do your christmas shopping through out the year.
Personally, the real solution isn't to buy crap for people at Christmas, but to make a point of catching up with friends, family, etc. Get off the treadmill of buying presents, unless it is a cheap joke present, or similar.

i hate shopping no matter what time of year it is!!!
i hate crowds, walking past people who smell like they have not showered for years, little kids running around and their parents are no where in sight to keep an eye on them or restrain them..... i hate it!!!
when i go shopping, i go as soon as the mall opens, that way it wont be as busy and i can find parking easier.
im in and out within an hour!!!!
my hubby is shocked that i hate shopping so much and at how quickly i manage to shop!!!
just try to go earlier than usual so you can still shop with your wife and when you have kids, do the same with them!!!
im 5 months pregnant and would definately only shop early in the mornings!!!!
its less stressful, believe me!!!

AMEN KALENDDA...!
Just stop, you receive stuff you dont want or cant use or is the wrong size and shape, you waste money buying someone else the wrong thing. Just stop. I only buy for wife and 2 kids and I dont go overboard. Each kid gets one item they want and one item they need, same for the wife.

No, perfectly normal.
I love giving and seeing smiles on my families face but I hate going out shopping with all the hype and rude shoppers, the pushing and shoving... you know that type of stuff.

Try shopping on line. It's easy, quick, painless and non-frustrating...Or better yet. Go to "one store" and you will see a whole bunch of different Gift Cards. But the lot, and your shopping is done! :)
