Surprisingly no one has this gotten this question correct. So here is the scientific answer to your good question. Typhoons form west of the international dateline and north of the equator. These storms affect Asia from Viet Nam to Japan and of course, all the islands of the western North Pacific Ocean. Most form around the Marshall Island region.

Typhoons, which are the same things as hurricanes, form over the Pacific Ocean Basin in the tropics. If they are west of 180 degrees longitude, or move west of that meridian, they are termed typhoons. They form as a result of large oceanic heat content being present. They are one of the processes the atmosphere uses to try to restore energy balance. They tend to affect eastern Asia locations, such as China, Japan, and the offshore island chains like the Philippines, Guam, etc.

Hurricanes, tropical cyclones and typhoons are all names for intense storms that form over warm oceans. The energy is developed from the latent heat of water vapor condensing to form clouds and rain. The storm starts as a small disturbance of warmer air which starts to rise. As it rises it it is subject to less pressure and it cools. Paradoxically this causes water vapor to condense releasing heat energy, which causes the air packet to rise further. If conditions are favorable, then the moving masses of air start to accelerate, sending more air higher , more water condensing and the storm gets stronger - a positive feedback. Air rushing in to replace the rising air is distorted by the earth's rotation - the so called Coriolis force - and creates the whirlpool effect. Once established, the rising air spreads out at high altitudes. Some may start to fall back to earth in the center of the storm forming "the eye". Essential conditions for the formation of these intense storms are: 1) Warm ocean water - over 25 degrees C 2) presence of disturbances 3 ) further than 5 degrees from the equator - coriolis forces are weak near the equator 4) No land - once deprived of the water energy the storm soon subsides - although it may linger as a rain depression.

However, each particular basin has its own seasonal patterns. On a worldwide scale, May is the least active month, while September is the most active.

In the Northern Atlantic Ocean, a distinct hurricane season occurs from June 1 to November 30, sharply peaking from late August through September. The statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is September 10. The Northeast Pacific Ocean has a broader period of activity, but in a similar time frame to the Atlantic. The Northwest Pacific sees tropical cyclones year-round, with a minimum in February and a peak in early September. In the North Indian basin, storms are most common from April to December, with peaks in May and November.

In the Southern Hemisphere, tropical cyclone activity begins in late October and ends in May. Southern Hemisphere activity peaks in mid-February to early March.
