did it have a major impact on western expansion? (In the united states) Any other inventions?

sorry, don't know when it was invented, but it was very importatnt to western expanision. it allowed many important goods to be carried across the country and spead technology. it also brought people across the country (HOBOS mostly :) ) and that allowed more ideas to be spread as well. hope i helped (i haven't exactly taken us history yet...)
