Almost every city has a Quilting Guild. Look in your local phone book and give them a call. Quilters love sharing what they know and can steer you in the right direction for classes.
Sometimes fabric stores that specialize in quilting supples offer lessons as well. You would not believe the little tricks you can learn that will save you time and frustration.
I used to work in a fabric shop and the quilters would come in for their fabric and show me things like how to cut a joined bias strip from a flat piece of fabric. It will help to get some good books on the subject as well. Here is a link for you to check out. Good Luck!

That is all you need. I agree, check the local library, ask around, and the internet is a good source of information on quilting. By quilt I am guessing you mean piecing quilts, Quilting is actually done after the top is put together, a batting and backing attached. And no it is not hard to learn, but it is addictive! lol

A simple machine will work great. Straight stitch is all you need. I have been making quilts for several years. If I were you, I would start on the easiest one there is to make. The nine patch would be your best bet. Quilts are from easy to hard to make. I will try to help you out if you want me to.
