First of all I'm not pregnant.

I'm 18 and I've been on the pill for the last year, but my doctor decided to take me off it because I was getting side effects. I got my period on the 13th November. It's now the 19th and I havn't had it.

Before I went on the pill, my periods were irregular.

I've also lost a lot of weight recently (more than 44lb/20kgs). Yesterday when I got my B12 injection I fainted. I've been feeling really dizzy and unwell lately..

I havn't had sex, there is no way I could be pregnant. I havn't had any of my usual cramping, sore back etc that I usually get before my period.

Is it likely I'm still irregular? Could it be my weight loss? Any other ideas?

Serious answers only please.

Dear Sarah,

During the course of dieting, demands are put on the body's glycogen stores, as well as fat stores, particularly when there is an expanse of time between meals. The demand on the glycogen stores, is promoted by the secretion of cortisol.

Whenever the adrenals secrete cortisol, in response to stress, there also is an increased secretion of DHEA, primarily in the sulfated form, i.e., DHEA-S. The free DHEA and the DHEA-S, after it becomes desulfated, i.e., becomes DHEA, are precursors to the various sex hormones, male and female.

This increased substrate ultimately results in increased androgen levels in women, interfering with normal menstrual cycling. No follicle, may become dominant, i.e., no ovulation, resulting in decreased estrogen levels and increased androgen levels. The heightened androgen production, of the ovaries themselves, may, very well, prevent future ovulation.

Also, the condition that previously resulted in irregular cycling, probably still is there. Oral contraceptives impose a regulatory effect, on the sexual cycle, they don't really get to the source of the problem.

Consider eating more frequently. Don't be in such a rush to loose weight. You have probably lost enough anyway. Lastly, I think you may benefit greatly, from the natural antiandrogen saw palmetto.

Saw palmetto is widely used to promote menstrual regularity, and alleviate the symptoms of PCOS, menopause, and BPH.

All contraceptive pills are hormone based. It means the girls, who are on pills, have their hormones regulated in a way to prevent pregnancy and obviously it affects periods. You should not be surprised to know that doctors prescribe contraceptive pills to girls having irregular periods, even though they are not planning to have sex in near future, to regulate them.

It is therefore obvious that when a girl comes out of the pills her periods would get disturbed for some time. As per your own admission you had irregular periods before you were put on pills so it seems that your periods have come back to their original position.

Watch for some time and if they do not become regular see a doctor.

Since ur periods have always been irregular then they still can be. the pill doesn't always regulate them. maybe it is time for you to try a new method. You getting sick from it could be your bodies way of telling you that method is no longer working. listen to your body because no one knows your body better then you no matter what they say or think. ur weight loss can definitely effect it. in fact any change in your body will effect it. maybe the reason you haven't started this month is because ur stressing it. stress is also another big factor for it if you have a high stress life then you are bound to be irregular or if you are very active

possibly because when you come off the pill if really can mess up a women's body. you could call the doctor and just ask for his nurse and explain to her she will know for sure because your doctor knows what's going on already. I don't think I would really be worried but to be safe check back with you doctor. I came off birth control 6 years ago and had my period irregular for 2 years and they said everything was fine an now It regular again. I think your fine. good luck and best wishes.

Wabby, as a man I have little idea of those things.
I will say that when I am in doubt about my health I see my Doctor, or at least ring a nurse in the practice.

Go to the doctor because you aren't feeling well. I don't think it's because of your weight loss, It might be because you were taken off of the pill.

I believe anxiety can delay the onset.

The B12 injection may account for the fainting, and the heat lately, may also be causing dizzy spells.

Either of those factors could cause your period to be late. You'll be okay. Don't worry about it.
