Info about Battle Stadium DON (language issues?)?

Question

My girlfriend's son wants the game, but it seems to only have been released in Japan. If I can get this version, would there be any language problems for a boy who speaks only English?

Also, we just bought him a PS2, any issues with region compatibility for the USA?

Of course there will be language problems if the boy isn't fluid in Japanese. The major problem he will have is the menu since I expect to be in Japanese. Other than that, it is mainly a fighting game and it will be a lot of trial and error trying to find out the attacks and how to unlock characters.
PS2 is region locked meaning that you have to get a free loader for the PS2 that will let him play the game.
