like what should i look out for that lets me know when to use the ideal gas laws instead of combined gas law.

First of all, the combined gas law is contained in the ideal gas law. You can't go wrong using the ideal law.

However, the ideal gas law specifically includes the quantity (moles) of gas, whereas the combined laws doesn't. So that is your biggest clue.
