I keep hearing that because it has a rotary engine it just can't posses a high amount of horse power around 500 or so. What kind of things could I do to enhance performance?

horsepower to wieght ratio....its the basis of hotrodding since the begining. The lighter the car, the less an Engine has to work. I can't see why you cant fabricate a turbo on it an free up the exhaust. Rotary engines are limited to machining and turbos, unlike the 4 cycle gas engines...... just shave wieght and you will be fine

That is a load of crap! Go to www.rx7club.com and see for yourself. the 13B is a very smooth running engine and doesn't require large displacement to achieve good power. Back when my car was built (1987), to get the same amount of power, you had to go above Five liters of displacement. Compare a 1989 RX7 (non-turbo) to a 1989 Camaro IROC Z and you'll see exactly what I mean

To get a rotary to perform better without modding it(assuming it's a manual transmission), you have to rev it higher. But be careful when revving it higher. In my RX7 (1987 with automatic transmission, zero mods), 4000rpm in 4th gear had me around 85-90mph.

According to sport compact car magazine articles, you can probably use different turbo computers, larger intercooler, exhaust, slightly upgraded turbo and other things to get to around 300-400hp. If you spend more than say $5K and do much more extensive upgrades and overhauls (ie rebuilt engine, seals, much larger turbo, new computer, new intake, huge injectors, etc) you can get a reliable 600-700 hp and for short spints and with realiablity sacrifices (like for drag racing) you could get 1000 hp.

With enough money you could make that block push well into 1000-1100 wheel horsepower.

It all depends on how much money you are willing to spend. If you don't have a decent budget and drive the car daily, just focus your money on maintenance.

They are powerful engines, but they are extraordinarily expensive to fix..
