Is there any theories on who wrote it, and when it was written?

The tune known commonly as the 'Coventry Carol' ('Lully, lulla, thow littell tyne child') was one of two settings in one of the 16th-century Coventry plays and was probably written in 1534, although the name of the composer is, sadly, not known.

I agree that it's one of the most beautiful Christmas carols ever written. It's so haunting and lovely.

However, I've never heard any theory on who actually wrote it. The earliest known printing of the melody is from the 1590s, but it was likely passed down from quite some time before that.

According to Wikipedia, it was written in the 16th century, and the author is unknown.
