Hi, I have a 7 month old, we started her on rice cereal at about 4 months as well, but only a little bit maybe a teaspoon to start, so its not so thick. I usually add it with the formula and wisk it then add it to the bottle to get the clumps out. Rice cereal seems to be less gummy too the oatmeal clumps really bad and their tummys cant take it.. My baby has eaten cereal in her bottle since then, also at about this age we went to faster nipple, it was taking her a long time to eat with the new born nipples. In about a week add a little more before long your baby will be a pro. also her fav is the gerber rice with apples. but we started her on plain first.

You can use this cereal but its better to spoon it to her instead of in the bottle. She may spit it out because its new to her and the texture is odd. The organic cereal is clumpier than the non organic, just shake the bottle up more is my suggestion or add milk then cereal then milk and shake the hell outta it. I had to *** a little b/c my daughter drank so fast she'd about choke to death on strait milk in the bottle. I don't know why it says 9 months, my pediatrician said to give my girl cereal at 4 months and I know of ppl who give it waaay earlier. Don't worry I don't think it'll hurt anything. Rice cereal should be 1st though not the oatmeal or barley.

Okay wait, you have a four month old that you're giving cereal to that's not supposed to go to an infant less than 9 months old? First, find cereal for a 4 month old....then make it very soupy. They can't swallow clumps / lumps. Babies choke very easily!!

NONE! A four month old should NOT be eating solids! It's bad for her digestive tract. Her bowels are still 'open' meaning that when she eats it, particles pass out and into her body, which can create allergens. Feeding her solids this soon can weaken her immunity and since she's on formula, she needs as much help with that as possible.
And never, EVER put cereal in a baby bottle. It presents a choking hazard and could potentially kill her.
I presented this as an 'opinion' but those are both medical facts.

Ok, first of all your going to get alot of controversy over this question & all of the answers... everyone has their own opinion and some feel VERY strong about it. lol
When my daughter was about 4 or 5 months we started putting about a teaspoon or a tad less in her bottle before she would go to bed. This would help her sleep at night and give her a little something to stick to her gut. Want to make sure its not to thick as you dont want them to choke. So we did about a teaspoon to every 3-4 ounces of milk.
She is now a year old and doing great! Not over weight and is absolutely perfect!!

you can't put it in her bottle, that would just be thick and awful. buy heinz or gerber baby first cereal or baby rice cereal. that is really the only suitable one for a four month old. you mix it with a little of her formula milk or some breast milk and gently feed it to her with a baby spoon. if she is still spitting it out, she probably isn't ready yet. don't buy a cereal for a 9 month old - it would have ingredients in it that her little tummy isn't ready for yet. in her bottle she should only have formula or breast milk

You should hold off on any solids (this includes cereal) until she's 6mths old. Then give it to her with a spoon. Please, don't put things for a 9mth old into a bottle for your 4mth old. There are age restrictions for a reason.

was it the rice cereal...maybe you put too much cereal and not enough formula. maybe you can try and make it much more runny? this could help with the transition from formula to food.

don't put in in the bottle, you only gonna over feed your baby, the whole point of cereal is to teach babies how to eat with a spoon different textures and tastes.
look for the Gerber baby rice cereal, oatmeal or barley, do you have a babies r us around where you live, they do carry it.
anyways my baby hated all these things so I mixed it with fruits instead (also Gerber fruits, stage one)

Use beechnut.
Never put it in her bottle! I mean, do you drink YOUR oatmeal?
Also, learning to eat from a spoon doesn't happen overnight. It takes time. Make it very runny at first.
***EDIT*** Thumbs down? Wow. Gerber is good too, but Beechnut is soy free.
