In order for the daughter cells to function correctly, they need to have exactly the right number of chromosomes. The chromosomes contain the genes that regulate all the activities of the cell. Too many or too few chromosomes is never an improvement. Would you buy a set of encyclopedias that is missing the book with S and T in it? What if it has an extra copy of the book with A and B in it? Does that make up for S and T?

Or what if you get your final exam with two of page 3 and no copy of page 4? Not good. It's the same in your cells.
