Go to the Internet Options in the control panel and set the connections tab, lan settings, automaticly detect settings.
Then try opening up the command prompt and set ipconfig there. If still no luck you will have to make sure you still have tcp/ip set to your network card. You can check this in your network connections properties.

well the simple problem is that you cant connect to the internet.
As per my knowledge, if you should be getting a 192 address( private address ) that means you are behind a router and this means that this is a broadband connection.
Try the following
1. run the command ipconfig on DOS Prompt( Start >> run >> cmd)
see if you get an ipaddress and a default gateway.
If not then it means that you are not able to talk to your router( in your case it might be the adsl modem )
see the physical connections in this case,
If you are able to ping the default router, then check if your router is connected to the internet or not by logging into the router( it might be 192.168.1.1) in an IE window.
************
If you are finding these steps hard to follow then call Tech Support of your ISP and they will be able to help you connect to the internet....
Thats what I have done for 2 years.
for ay more help.. mail me...
cheers

You need to set your preferred DNS to that of your Internet service provider. You should be able to have this done automatically. Go to control panel, network connections, & rt click, Interent protocol & make sure it is set to obtain a IP address automatically

Try removing the power cable from your modem (and router if you have one). Do this for about a minute then turn it back on... wait a minute or two for all the lights to come back on. Then turn your computer back on.
By the way, your ISP is the one that sets up which IP address you have. When you renew, it just renews your current address.

169.x.x.x is the number you get when your computer can't find a router to recieve your ip address. If you are wireless it might be turned off. there is usually a button to do that.

first of all try turning your computer off unplugging your modem and router if you have one and then power then make sure that all of your network cables are plugged in good then power each device back up in this order
plug in modem wait until it is all lit up and appears to be running normal
plug in router and wait about 10 seconds and then turn your computer on
if that does not work try uninstalling and reinstalling your network card drivers

Thats a complicated one right there, you should have someone look at it in person. I could fix it but I'm not sure I could talk you through all the steps that could be involved.
