When a program is running, in the background or not, it will use system resources and in turn slow your computer down. Depending on you computers specs you can have lots of programs open, but mostly you want to have as few programs running as you can to make sure you're computer is as fast as it can go. There are many ways to save memory, try looking in the bottom right corner of the screen and clicking on the icons and closing ones you don't use.
Keep things like anti virus running so don't close everything down there. Most programs who start up with the computer have options to turn that off so they don't open and that can make your computer faster without actually getting rid of the programs. You can also click start, all programs, startup and delete shortcuts in there because those programs will open when windows starts.
A more complicated way is to hit start, run and type in msconfig. Go over to the the startup tab and unchecking the programs you don't need to start up, such as quicktime of itunes. Careful what you disable though, there are some in there you need to have running. Do a google search on them if you want to look them up.

may need a good clean up
A local hospital got a new computer for the pharmacy
and in 6 months was running really slow
took them 2 1/2 hours to run these two things - - - - -
BUT - the puppy ran like a scalded dog afterward
*************
START
My Computer
right click – Local Disc (C:)
left click – Properties
choose 2nd tab – TOOLS
error Checking – click CHECK NOW
put check marks in both boxes
click – START (NOW- you will probably get a message saying you need to restart your computer – because this program wants to be the BOSS! – click YES)
also from here
Defragmentation – click Defrag Now
Click – Analyze – within seconds it will tell you if you need to - - if it says you are ok – FINE – if not – defrag – this will put
files back into closer proximity to make them work faster – when complete
restart your computer to make Scan Disk work
Best of Luck

Have you scanned for malware and viruses? How much RAM do you have? Running on too little can slow everything down. Also reduce the number of programs on your startup list, remove unnecessary programs from the PC and also run disk cleanup. Second common reason for slowdowns is fragmentation. Analyze your drive, if its afflicted with the disease, thats the reason why startup/ shutdown and general performance is very slow.

Several things affect your pc : browser cache full, malware could be slowing you down, more than one security system (AV) running, to name just a few. I recommend that you shut down your computer, leave it off for 15 mins, then clear your browser, defragment your hard drive, and , if you can, defrag your registry.

The data you provided are too scanty. you never indicated what type of pc hardware are you using and what type of OS. well, lets try..pls remove icons paste on your desktop because it consumes a lot of ram memory. transfer it instead in your taskbar. unload your garbage via your disk clean up. if your using xp try deleting your prefetch folder contents. open your msconfig and uncheck your start up programs you cannot used once you open your PC..to be effective try installing window washer it will do the work.
Now, you go for the jugular so that next time you open your pc its fast..change your boot sequence in your CMOS set up..
enjoy the speed.

Try defragmenting your hard disks.
Or better yet disassemble your pc and clean all contacts from dust and put it back together.
Good luck.
