My husband went through this not too long ago. We too live in Cincinnati, and he wasn't too thrilled with the college options here. He took online courses through one online university for about two years. Early on he realized that the courses weren't the best. He would turn in a program he had written, and after 2 or 3 weeks he'd finally get his grade telling him he failed. The reason he would fail was not because his program didn't work, but because he had tried actually writing it and hadn't copied the one from the book, which is what they were looking for. He tried keeping up with it as long as he could, but in the end he dropped out. Of course when he started looking at other programs he found out that not a single course transferred. However, a friend of his is working on a degree from another online university, and he loves it and has nothing but great things to say about it and his employer foots the entire bill.

My point is that just like brick and mortar universities, every online university is different. I would make sure to ask any university if they are accredited, their classes are transferable (you would be surprised how many are not), what the graduation rate is, what the average time till graduation is, and if they accept the GI Bill. Even if you don't get the GI Bill, it gives you an idea what the federal government thinks about them, which can actually mean a lot. I would also suggest trolling around places like Slash Dot and various message boards/chat rooms to find out what other computer people/employers think of various online universities. After my husband had taken a few of his online courses, he found out through a chat room that other people had enrolled there and hated it. People only had horrible things to say about it and it seems that very few people ever graduated from there.

I hope this helps!

whether the program is accepted by potential employers depends entirely upon the reputation of the school that awards the credential.

You can take CSCI E-75 Building Dynamic Websites or CSCI E-12 Fundamentals of Website Development online at Harvard University http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2007-08/DistanceEd/courses/ that would be pretty well respected by everyone.

You could take the same type course from Joe's Online College and it'd not get the same respect.

East Carolina University has an interesting looking graduate certificate in web development online. http://www.tecs.ecu.edu/tsys/grad/certs/wsd.htm
