I was shopping at the mall today. When I look around most I viewed were physically unattractive. (Sorry to be so blunt..please do not respond that I am shallow).

I guess that is why beauty magazines sell, movie stars and plastic surgeons make a lot of money :)

I sometimes play a game. I see how long it takes before I see someone I am actually attracted too. (Maybe I am picky..but there are times it takes hours if I am lucky)

I really believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Ever wonder if people find those who you see as attractive as unattractive? I find one of the most popularly admired actresses out there right now to be nothing short of hideous. But most people do not share my view on that. So, who is to say that your definition of attractive or unattractive is the one we should go by? And attractiveness grows and fades when personality is thrown in the mix. It is amazing how the prettiest people get really ugly when they are nasty inside...and vice versa

Several Reasons -

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and each person has their own idea of beautiful appearances.

Life takes its toll on us

Magazines etc use photoshop to make imperfect people perfect

Attractive people attract each other shrinking the beauty pool everyone else makes choices out of the remaining options

Beautiful people earn more money and have the means to take better care of themselves and put thier beautiful offspring through the better schools

We have come to define beauty as a person who is balanced left and right (face and body) the more the imbalance occurs the less people judge them as beautiful.

We are a nation that promotes youth and slenderness. But we are also a nation with the majority population segment (the baby boomers) reaching ages no longer youthful and we have an obesity epidemic.

Probably many more but these cover the main views.

We aren't gold coins, we can't please everyone. Before you judge other people take a look at your parents. You see them attractive? If they are good looking to you, chances are that you were born lucky enough to believe such a thing. Most people think they are good looking, when they aren't. Next time try a game, I call the truth. Look around and see how many people try to flirt with you, and if they are beautiful or ugly.

I found no happiness in being beautiful for the only people that admire beauty are the ugly. I guess you'll always have to be content being loved by someone less attractive than you, or being with someone who believes you are less attractive and so forth.

People in beauty magazines are there because they ARE beautiful, similar with movie stars but add the ability to act. They aren't the average population or people wouldn't make a big deal of their not-so-average looks. But think of it this way, I'm sure those unattractive people you observed at the mall are attractive to someone they know. I can think of many examples of friends that couldn't be in a beauty magazine, but are very attractive because of their personality. The question is more "why do we think models and movie stars are supposed to be the standard?" One answer is we live in a consumerist society where marketing images are plastered everywhere to sell products.

I totally notice things like that too. But in particular places. Like at Walmart, I play a game where I count the fat people and boy does it add up fast. And of course in low income areas you are going to see people who can't afford to keep themselves up. If you want to be around attractive people at a mall, go to an upper scale mall and/or a cosmetics counter.

Go watch idiocracy. and the world has come to view beauty in obscure ways. People think anorexia is good looking or ridiculously high arched eyebrows. The world has become jaded to the real beauty in the world. The kind of beauty that's natural and that doesn't make you look twice because you never stopped looking at it to begin with. The kind of beauty that can be felt by all of your senses. Real, genuine beauty is a rarity in the world today.

Hang around stores where the "beautiful people" shop, and maybe you'll change your mind.

because people who are unattractive typicly only get the chance to have kids with other people who are unattractive. and than they have children. and theres so many places to get a quick (unhealthy) meal very inexpensive. and people use food instead of disipline to shut their kids up. and thats why i think its something like 60 percent of americans are obease
