Limewire is a legal program.
However, most of the things you will be downloading with it are copyrighted materials. In the USA and many other countries... a copyright violation is a FEDERAL FELONY.
A federal felony can never be expunged from your record and the time you do is a mandatory 75%... unlike state felonies which can be expunged and the time is significatly less due to overcrowding.
As for "bad stuff that it may do"... you are opening your computer up to other people.. .giving strangers access to your computer. You are potentially downloading a copy of limewire that is infected depending on where you get it from.
You can certainly download something via limewire that is infected. So if you do not have a proper security suite in place you are certainly opening yourself up for "more bad stuff" than you already are.
Good Luck

Limewire as software is not "illegal". What is illegal, the data that you may download. If the music, games, movies, are copyrighted, then this is a crime. Plus P2P sharing of files, you run a very high risk of getting trojans from other peoples PC, and the servers that are used to download the files.

26,000 people are facing lawsuits for using P2P file-stealing programs such as Limewire.
People DO get caught stealing and "sharing" copyrighted "stuff" using P2P filesharing programs such as Limewire, Bearshare, Kazza etc and torrents, and face huge fines.
People as young as 12 years old get busted.
"The music industry has turned its big legal guns on Internet music-swappers — including a 12-year-old New York City girl who thought downloading songs was fun."
"Brianna LaHara said she was frightened to learn she was among the hundreds of people sued yesterday by giant music companies in federal courts around the country."
"I got really scared. My stomach is all turning," Brianna said last night at the city Housing Authority apartment where she lives with her mom and her 9-year-old brother."

The software is not illegal, but what you download is.
P2P downloading is downloading stuff off other people's computers. You can get viruses and other types of malware. Plus, it opens a hole in your firewall every time you use it.
