At the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861, the "massive advantages" did not help the North win the war. They assumed it would be over in 90 days, and made asses of themselves. The "great strategy" only came much later when Lincoln chose Ulysses S. Grant to be Lieutenant-General (or in command of all the Union armies - West and East). Prior to this under McClellan, their was no joint strategy - both East and West working simultaneously to put total pressure on the South from all sides.
As for dumb luck, by itself, it is never enough to win a war.
To win a war, you need armies with capable commanders who utilise strategies, and soldiers who believe in the cause(s) they are fighting for.

The north won the war b/c of its massive advantage in population, industry & wealth.
The north's strategy throughout the war was ridiculous, especially Grant's attrition. In any other war, at any other time, Grant would have been up on charges. The idea that your side can lose more men than the other side until you win. I mean it worked, but what kind of pig-headed strategy was that? I could have come up with something better.
Dumb luck? No. The north with its superior resources was destined to win.
