It's prolly something really simple like a thermostat stuck open. As long as it runs cold, it runs rich and burns extra gas. Or a clogged air filter. or dirty injectors.

High fuel consumption can come from several areas. You could have a leak in the fuel line or fuel tank. You could have a malfunctioning fuel pump. You could have an overly rich mixture from a clogged air filter, or you could have a defective cold start enrichment valve which is not detecting engine warm up. A defective thermostat may keep the engine running cold, but not to the extent of fuel consumption dropping to 12 miles per gallon. Check everything, including dragging brakes. RSVP.

Could be a many things. Miles on car?
Most likely
Temp sensor, cold start circuit and/or bad thermostat.
Low tire pressure, bad spark plugs.

Less likely
Could be low compresson due to not enough valve clearance.
Driving in too low of gear for conditions.
Dragging brakes.

Take it in for a tune up and complete check by a good service dept tell them about your low gas mileage.

Have a competent mechanic check the oxygen sensors. When they are old, it's possible they can clog, leading to increasingly worse mileage. However, I recently thought I had two bad 02 sensors on my 1997 ///M3. I bought the Bosch replacements and asked the dealer to install them (saved over $150 on parts). However, the dealer's diagnostic computer indicated that my sensors were fine, so we didn't replace them. The mechanic said, why bother... we rarely find a bad 02 sensor. But it is possible. Yes, I got a refund on the sensors. My ///M3's on-board computer indicates around 26 highway, and a manual calculation over a 400 mile trip confirms.

Did you RESET the mpg?

You should if you haven't done so... and it's generally a good habit to reset it on every fill-up.

Mine gives me about 27mpg (calculated) on a mostly highway drive over 400+ miles (a tankful of gas); the display consistently shows 1.5mpg better.

In the city, it drops to about 13-18mpg. You don't need to drive in NYC to get low mpg. Frequent start-stops, traffic lights, stop signs, trying to beat the yellow light, trying to beat the next SUV on green, slowing for workzones...etc all add to it.

Mine's a 323ci.
