Okay. So I just finished watching Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on TNT. Thanks to DVR, I was able to watch it over a couple of days. Anyway, this is a fantastic movie, but I have a question: Why do Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf, Legolas, Cate Blanchett and the other Elf leave out to sea at the end of the movie? I didn't get it!!

The elves had been leaving Middle Earth throughout the trilogy, because men would come to dominate the coming age, and the power of the elves was fading. At the end of the story, the three Elven rings have lost their power because of the destruction of the One, and their bearers (Elrond, Gandalf, and Galadriel) are among those leaving. Bilbo and Frodo, as bearers of the One Ring leave with them. Basically, all the people whose lives and powers were dependent on the rings of power leave Middle Earth because the power of the rings has ended. Their leaving marks the end of the age. Also, traveling into the west (setting sun) is a metaphor for dying.

They were going to the Grey Havens, also known as the undying lands. Mainly just elves went there but Bilbo and Frodo had a longer life span from the time they were the bearer of the ring and were invited to join the elves. What you see at the end of the film is supposedly the last of the elves leaving Middle Earth and the "Time of Man" commencing. The book tells us that one more ship brought Samwise later, as a onetime bearer of the ring he was also allowed to go there. I think it is a sort of Heaven for the "immortal" races.

They are leaving these shores its kinda like they are passing on as in dieing. Frodo was given unatural long life by the ring and well gandalf had already died as was pretty much ressurected to help the others. I'm pretty sure thats how it works in the book. Feel free to correct me if i am wrong

I have multiple theories.

1. There really is a utopia on the other side of the ocean.
2. If you read the book, you may think that the world that they are traveling to is death.

Frodo says that he can't bear life in Middle Earth any longer, so it is likely that 2 is correct.

I think they said it was the time for man to rule so I guess that means there won't be anymore elves, dwarves, wizards. And they just went on one last journey and that probably means since there's no more war there's no reason for us to be here anymore!! So they probably journeyed to their own death or some other place I don't know!!

i personally think it is because they all have reached a higher order of life and are being sent away to live with the deities of that world. not so much that they are dying but maybe they were granted a blessing of godliness and are to live out their days in a world of peace and bliss.
