the sunshine is for you, no longer the fish - the fish can see basically with extensive-unfold easy. to help administration the algae, cut back the sunshine to approximately 6 or 7 hours per day. There are no regulations, so which you would be able to play around and notice what works precise for you. you do no longer want a timer, in spite of the shown fact that it may help modify it to come again on on the right time for you - once you're abode to confirm the tank. If the tank has incandescent lighting fixtures quite then fluorescent i does no longer use it in any respect, different than to view the fish mutually as i became there.

Ideally, fish and plants enjoy 12 hours of light, which includes the low-light levels of sunrise and sunset, and some fish actually seem to become healthier when exposed to those new LED moonlights which are used at night. However, most fish are happy with 6-8 hours of light each day.

Fish don't need the light on at all. The light is for your plants and for your enjoyment in watching them. In their natural habitat fish only get as much light as filters down through the water when it's sunny out.

my fish have their light on from when i get home from work at night til when i go to sleep. i have my 10gallon tank in my bedroom and i have a fairly well lit room. so depending on where the tank is and what natural light that they have as to whether you can just open the blinds or have to turn their light on.
my housemate has tropical fish and he has his light on from about 7pm to about midnight i think....?
hope this helps...
