I'm a fan of Dave Valentin. Flauta y Timbal is a famous flute piece performed with Tito Puente.

There's this guy on YouTube named Greg Patillo. He is an outstanding and versatile musician. He has his own band in New York called PROJECT. He is most famous for his versions of the Mario Brothers Theme and also the Inspector Gadget Theme. He plays killer versions of both "Freedom Jazz Dance" and "Fables of Faubus."

It is interesting that some one mentioned in passing, Jean Claude Rampal, who is usually considered (in spite of James Gallway) to be the best in the world! Rampal's SUITE FOR FLUTE & JAZZ PIANO (with pianist/composer Claude Bolling) is a complete work but broken into shorter "songs"! It is wonderful and anyone who plays flute has to hear this recording!

All of the players mentioned are good. I love Hubert Laws and Herbie Mann. Both play a lot "pop" but at the very TOP level! Don't overlook James Moody, known more as a saxophonist but excellent on flute!

Herbie Mann and Hubert Laws. But I also liked Canadian Moe Kaufman. He was one of the first to bring a jazz song to the Hit Parade (Swinging Shepherd Blues)
Jean Claude Rempal is a very good jazz flutist. I have an album where he plays with Claude Bolling which is absolutely great.

Hubert Laws - Land of Passion

Holly Hoffman - Flutopia and Live at Birdland

Rampall - the Bolling suites

Paul Horn - pick anything

Sam Most and Herbie Mann - outstanding "old school" sound and the revolution in jazz flute. Most's Rio Romance got me wanting to play latin/jazz flute.
