if the total amount of the compound contains 18.35g and there is 5.74 g of Sn (tin).... therefore there is

5.74 g / 18.35 g x 100% of tin present in the compound

to find the amount of chlorine in the compound:

18.35 g - 5.74 g = gives you the amount of chlorine in the compound

therefore the percent composition of chlorine would be

(18.35 g - 5.74 g) / 18.35g x 100% = % of chlorine

tin ==> 100*5.74/18.35 = 31.28% by weight
chlorine ==> 100% - 31.28% = 68.72% by weight
