Just figured out how to check my brake fluid in my car. It's completely empty (no wonder my brakes were off...) It's used, so I have no clue where the manual is. Does anyone know what kind of brake fluid should be going into this particular model?

And should I fill it to the max line, or fill it half way, run the car a bit. Then let my car cool off and put in more?

Veiled,
Your in luck. Would you believe I have my 98 Mercury Sable owners manual in front of me at this very minute? You're brake fluid should be High performance DOT 3 Motor Vehicle brake fluid.

I'll have to warn you however, there's a reason the brake fluid is GONE. Most likely you have a rusted brake line because somewhere between where your feet rest behind the steering wheel back to the brake equalizer junction box behind the left rear wheel, a leaky wheel cylinder, cut or worn out brake hose. Get it checked immediately.

It's perfectly fine to dump in brake fluid with the motor hot running or cold. Purchase a cheap small funnel because brake fluid is sold in very odd shaped cans. I'll tell you right now you will need a minimium of a quart an a half because you will need to have your brake lines blead of all the air. while bleading they'll find the leak.

Good luck to ya!

Like was said before. DOT 3, fill it up to the max line. Have someone check your brakes, a very good possibility that you have air in your lines, not a good thing. Maybe take a basic auto mechanic class also. Don't be one of those women that all they can do is fill the gas tank.

it takes DOT 3. fill it to max. if it was totally empty you likely have a leak. have it checked out.
