of course the stores are out there in your face and want you to buy more and more stuff. Commercials temp kids into thinking they need every toy made. You have to set values in your home to reflect want Christmas is about and that is what sets the tone of Christmas. You have to fight the gimmes by
- Nov and Dec reduce the amount of tv your kid watches
- mute commercials
- discuss unrealistic claims made by commercials
- reduce your own debts and teach kids about money
- replace tv with other activies - skating, snoeshoeing, baking, card writing
- reason parents give so many gifts is because they feel quilty of not spending time with their kids. Spend time with your kids
-rent christmas movies with no commericals
-ask your kids to make a list of things they want that don't cost money
-keep a kindness calander so that they can show santa how nice they are
-encourage family member to give family gifts rather then individual presents
-say something thoughtful about the person when you give the gift.

There are so many things you can do to fight the gimmes and it starts at home. Don't set expectations that you should give everything you have to satisfied every wish and want.

depends on who you are.

If your a christian, and Its all about gifts to you, then yes, it is too materialistic, but if your - say atheist then no, what else would it be about to you?

I personally think it is way too materialistic, just because, everyone focuses on gifts, and good, rather than the true reason which is the Jesus Chirst was born

definetly, our society has turned to giving and recieving rather than celebrating the birth of Christ. Sorta takes the Christ out of CHRISTmas
