OK , the 1998 engine from 528 is the old generation engine compare to 2001 is the same body style but the engine and electrical parts r worst the suspension on 1998 5 series is not that strong and u will have problems , the cooling system is bad u probably need to change the thermostat to avoid overheating ! the plastic inside is low quality the leather on the seats is poor quality compare to 520 for 2001, so my advice is squeeze some more money and get a 2001 version and if is possible get the 5 speed tranny don`t get the automatic ! and the power steering hoses on this 1998 model are so bad and in 75% of the casese they need to be change because they bleed

You left out some very important information that would be required to give a pertinent reply to your question. For example: how many miles does the vehicle in question have? Has it been regularly and properly maintained, with records? How many previous owners?
But, in general, the car which you ask about, the e39 BMW, is an excellent vehicle. BMW's 6 cylinders are very reliable. However, comparing it to a Toyota Camry is not an apples to apples comparison. The BMW is a luxury sport sedan, the Camry is an economy sedan. Totally different class of vehicle.
You should decide what you really want: Sport, performance, handling? or Economy, fuel efficiency, low maint, etc? Assign a value for each point you want and then decide which vehicle suits your needs.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Oddly enough these cars are known to have a faulty dash meaning things flicker on and off. Its not bad but they do have this issue. BMW's are notorious for transmission problems after a 100,00 miles. Its not a bad car but beware of the high maintenence cost.

you dont sound like the type of person that should own a BMW
people dont buy BMW's for reliability, or great gas mileage, or cheap and easy to find parts.
We buy BMW's for the sheer enjoyment of driving.
you sound a little too obsessed with those small things, so i wouldnt purchase a BMW because its most likely too expensive for you

BMWs are mechanical devices, just like any other automobile. If you were to buy one tomorrow, it may break down the next day, or it may run forever. Repair parts are not cheap, but again, you may never need to do more than just change oil and keep the car clean. A lot of a car's reliability depends on how you drive it, and how you maintain it.

I don't see them. A Ford taxi will last twice as long, with twice the comfort. Any number of cars will get better mileage. And parts are outrageous. They ride too stiff to be fun, as are most German cars, and not attention is paid to climate control. Want fun? get a Mustang GT. Blow the doors off a 5, for 1/2 the price.
