It is still a tradition with our family, a lot of the Christmas traditions have died out for some reason, I still make plum pudding, popcorn balls, stringing popcorn garlands, Taffy pulling and make homeade candy/cookies . I am going to show my little Grand-Nephew how to make a popcorn garland this year.
People shouldn't be in such a hurry and keep a few of these nice traditions, and pass them on.

When my daughter was little, I used to make popcorn balls and wrap them in waxed paper and tie a red loop on top. We used to cut out pictures from old Christmas cards and tape one on each popcorn ball and hang them on the tree. I also used to make a bunch and send them to the school for the class Christmas party. They were very popular and didn't last long.

Yes, I have seen popcorn strings being made.

And believe it or not, popcorn balls, can still be found in stores, if you look hard enough!

To help your question, (because some things are regenal) the state I live in is NY!

My family used to! Popcorn and cranberries. I thought it looked lovely on the tree, but we don't do it anymore. I think we stopped the year my dad was in the hospital, because things were so crazy, and we never did it again. When I start a family of my own I'm going to. :)
I think it's a great tradition, but I used to always stick myself with the needle about 10 dozen times. It was still fun though.

I used to make popcorn balls with my children with fair success. We tried stringing popcorn, but it should have come with instructions. All I remember is a lot of broken popcorn and a 18 inch popcorn string. We never tried again. Garland was cheap !

When My first two kids were small and we did not have much money we used to love doing that to decorate the tree. Miss those good times. (wink)
