Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers had a great influence on ballroom in the USA. When I watched movies with them the ballroom their dancing looked very much like American Smooth Ballroom, the way this style is danced in competitions. (Except for the tap parts.) Wich is a highly choreographed ballroom dance routine where partners release their hold to do some fancy steps on their own. Much of Astaire and Rogers' work portrayed social dancing, although the performances were highly choreographed (often by Astaire) and meticulously staged and rehearsed.
The music from those movies is played to this day in many ballroom dance studios and competitions. I went to see "Shall we Dance" (yeah, the most original and first "Shall we Dance") and I was surprised that we know almost every song from that movie.
It's just my observation. I don't know when did American Smooth start or who started it.
They also danced tap, sometimes integrating it into ballroom dancing.

Fred Astaire was an amzing tap dancer. He completely revolutionised tap dancing forever. Astaire studied from a young age to become an actor, though his singing and acting would not have got him the distance he went in the end due to his amazing dancing. Astaire did not tap like generations before him, though he was inspired by personalities such as Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and John "Bubbles" Sublett. He also learnt to tango and to waltz, and formed variations of these in collaboration with tap dancing, this is what made him so amazing. His great performance quality and thrilling foot work can be seen in one his best dance works of all time "slap that base" which he performed on a boat. Fred Astaire was the best tap dancer the world had seen at that time, and he had revolutionised dancer forever.

First, he was the consummate professional, and rehearsed for HOURS on every move every day.
He redefined tap and ballroom dancing. His grace and athleticism left all the others behind. One of my biggest regrets in life is that, even when I worked at the track, I never got the chance to meet him. My uncle was Ginger's arranger...that's as close as I got. lol
The famous dancing on the ceiling stands as one of the greats of all time.
Try reading "The Moon's A Balloon", and "Bring On The Empty Horses", by David Niven, if you want to learn some interesting facts about Fred.
