As a few of the previous folks have mentioned, there are several alternative ways to heat, it simply depends on your resources, ambition, energy and resolve. There are wood burner add-on's for a regular gas or oil furnace, there are stand alone wood burners for outdoors, (boilers, in effect, that heat water which is in turn piped into the house where the radiant heat is extracted.). There are corn burners, which work a lot like wood burners, except that the price of corn is going up as well as oil. Then there are the large electric heaters that are popping up on TV and in the mag's, etc. I have bro & sis in laws that have a couple of them and they seem to think they're saving money using them over the gas. ???? You're going to have to do some research to decide what's best for you. Geothermal is a great way to go, but is normally installed when a home is first built, seldom later. It's very inexpensive to operate, but it's really expensive to have installed.

corn stoves are cheaper to operate if you have someplace to store corn
outside wood burners are also cheap depending on where you live
in a city-bad idea
in the country-that'll work
where i live in minnesota you can buy 80 cord of oak for
$800 and that'll last into next winter

Geothermal heating. If you have the upfront monies you can use it for cooling and heating and heating your domestic (hot water) needs.

Although pricey, space heaters or a gas stove. You'll save more than you would using your heater.
