Good god, what most of you know of China would fit in a thimble.
I have lived here for the last two years and visited twice prior and what I have learned of China and the western version is different.
How many of you know that China reduced its military by 1 million a year ago?
How many of you know that China's military is a relic of the 60's, 70's and 80's and they can finally afford to UPGRADE and MODERNIZE IT?
How many of you know they do not have a history of imperialistic behavior and the last time they invaded a country was in the late 70's and when they reached their objective, they left one month to day the day later and have not been back since?
How many of you know that they have made a pledge to the world they will not invade a sovereign nation? The USA has made no such pledge.
How many of you know they believe in a countries right to self determination? The USA certainly doesn't.
How many of you realize the Taiwan problem has been going on for almost 60's years and all the dire warnings of a pending invasion from the west are a lot of hot air. Do you even know they have normal trade, tourism, diplomatic missions and technological as well as cultural cooperation and trade between them?
How many of you know that China sells 3% of the world trade in arms, whereas the USA sells 36% according to a 2005 congressional study and some independent studies put that at up to 60%?
How many of you know that China can not be communistic, since that is an economic model that is the opposite of capitalism?
How many of you know that China does indeed have an election system in place at the province (state) level? And that their president is elected by the legislative body that is put in power by the people, just like England?
How many of you know that the communist party is not the only party in China and that people from outside the party are encouraged to get involved with government and run for office?
Just how much do you know of China? Because, apparently the same ones I keep correcting are spewing the same tired BS.
===========
The four elements?
Planning (a series of 5 and one year plans took China from an economic joke to world class in 20 years)
Stability (China has a very stable government and society. That is one of the reasons global companies invest so heavily there)
Huge labor force and low living expense (Labor force of 800 million and despite its growth rate has unemployment and underemployment problems that will keep wages and the cost of living low for decades)
Learns from its mistakes (when China makes mistakes, they seem to learn from them. That is the result of 5,000 years of history and 3,500 years which has been recorded -- they have not been involved in world trade for a hundred year, they are bound to make bad mistakes, but rarely do we hear them repeating them later)
The USA and other western countries would do themselves well to listen to this very old and wise parent. With a history that is almost 22 times more then the USA, it would do us well to lean about them and how they managed to go through extreme hardship and turn it into advantage.
Peace
Jim

Interesting question. But a few years ago a Chinese told me that China has a 4,000,000 ready active ground force and 2,000,000 ready reserve. I could have these numbers backwards. But with financial and economic interests invested real heavily in China for the past three years and since many big industries have moved there who knows ? It is a theory that since the fortune 500 companies and the Bildabergers and the Trilateral Commission have interests there than it is possible that China will be the world's next super power. I think it was David Rockefeller who said that China has the government that all nations should pattern their systems after. There are those among the "power" elites who believe that Mao was a great leader. Was he not responsible for more than sixty million deaths in his country ?

Population, they have the manpower to get big projects done. And they don't believe in human rights so they can use people any way that they see fit. They are able to relocate villagers to the benefit of their projects. Children are a source of workers for the Chinese.
Citizens Rights Ignored, the Chinese don't afford citizens any kind of work or consumer protection. Since there are no violations, there are no investigations or punishments to slow down work and production. They will have amazing numbers of exports by ignoring human rights and environmental protection.
Economic Explosion, the Chinese are migrating from farms into the cities where they see consumer goods and earn wages to buy them. This will fuel their economy so they can build more industries and fill them with unprotected workers, even kids.
Land Mass, because of its size the country has a lot of natural resources it will be exploring and exploiting. Smart partnerships with other countries will keep them supplied with resources they do not have in China.
It is elements like this that will make them a major power in the next two decades.

I hope America gets back to its basic principles and becomes energy independent (carbon or otherwise), adopts a better trade policy, and produces essential goods here in the 50 states. We should maintain a strong military but stay out of the petty battles that just don't affect us one way or the other.
That being said the four things are America's continued acceptance of horrible trade policies, political correctness, membership in the UN, and outsourcing of production.
