I'm a Republican, white, conservative, professional, etc. I agree that the "Founding Fathers", and their inspiration, King George---of whatever Roman Numeral---were hyper critical. I also agree that FDR, and some of the other Presidents mentioned were also worthy.

But, my vote goes to---Martin Luther King. I know that there would have been no MLK, without the "Founders", Paul Revere, etc, etc, etc So, my vote can be legitimately attacked as being "ex post facto" on that basis. On the other hand, without those slave mongers, maybe he wouldn't have been necessary!

But, if we assume the existence of the US, for the purposes of this argument/question, and then reflect upon the one, single, individual who has shaped this country as it is today, Then MLK wins, hands down, in my opinion.

While imperfect personally (me too, how about you?), if there is such a thing as an American Ghandi, he was it. If there is such a thing as an American Martyr, he was it. If there is such a thing as an American Orator, he was it. If there is such a thing as a single American human being who could change the course of history for the better, who could raise the consciousness of a Nation, and who could do all of that in a fashion that has come to be seen as entirely appropriate, he was it.

In my opinion, his influence, the power of his message, and the way that message was delivered, was the most profound of any American who has ever lived. It is also my opinion, that the vast majority of his influence/personna was selflessly righteous (unlike the "pretenders" today, who invoke his name for their own purposes, personal aggrandizement, and $).

So, that's my thought.

In my opinion, there wasn't any one person--it was a community effort with strong leaders. If we take one away, say Benjamin Franklin(great man), we'd still have the United States, but with less to boast about. Each one of us is a part of American history--let's live up to the finest ideals and set an example for others. Everybody counts. Amen.

a lot of people will say george washington but without king george the third to inspire us with his abuse there'd be no reason for washington to lead us to independence. washington would have would have wound up staying in the english army.
