(the penalty for desertion, treason, or spying was death) Important was how it was carried out. Hanging was saved for lower criminals. Whereas firing squad was considered a more honorable execution)

All 13 States used the death penalty widely immediately after independence. It wasn't till 1972 that the Supreme Court stopped it, and then they reversed themselves in 1976.
