My theory is that they were more accepted by females in their lives as they were growing up. The guys wouldn't hang out with them, so they developed feminine characteristics. But, that's a gross generalization, because many gays are also very masculine, and guess what? The masculine gays usually aren't attracted to the femmes, so there they are again surrounded by feminine peers. You just might not know who is and who's not. One of the sissiest men I ever met was straight and had a beautiful wife.

A lisp or proper annunciation that is the question. You can have a lisp which is far more predominant and noticeable. But, if you are like me, you annunciate to the point where it almost sounds like a lisp but isn't. It is really hard to explain. I think it is just something that happens though.
Unless over annunciating your s's means you have a lisp I am definitely sure I don't.
(I always thought a lisp was when you prononced your s's as if they were th's)

I don't know why I answer these -- as I am not GAY BUT I do understand a lot about it -- via friends, life in general, etc. A LOT of boys are born feminine -- a lot of gay guys are NOT feminine or feminine speaking - it's not a lisp -- it is them...it's who they are.....and that's okay. It's not up to judge them -- ya know?? It truly isn't...

Most gay men do not speak with a lisp. A very small minority of gay men are effeminate (act girly, have lisps, etc). These are just the guys who stand out--you've probably seen hundreds or thousands of gays and just didn't notice it.

That is an interesting question. I am friends with several gay boys, only a few of which have the affected speech.
There is an interesting survey online currently...

I'm quite interested in the results, myself.
I personally think that the gay boys who are less comfortable with themselves adopt it, because the boys I know who do NOT have it are very confident and secure in their sexuality.

I don't think so! I was married to one of those "gay" guys who was in total denial, but anyone with half a brain could look and listen to him and know that he was gay! Too bad my brain had not yet developed fully when I married him at the innocent age of 17!

They probably don't adopt one, some either have a lisp or don't. Just like heterosexual men.

a lisp is when you pronounce "s" as "th" I'm not really sure what that has to do with sexual orientation or gender
