When he was 17 years old he left home "volunteering" to go to Vietnam because he knew he'd be drafted and in his words "if he was going to die for his country he'd rather it be his choice ... and not someone else's"
By some miracle he made it out of their alive ... and he was infantry so that was a miracle in itself. He never talked about Vietnam - he was too scarred - the only thing he ever shared with me was that he lost his best friend there and so he named my little brother after him.
When he got back home he became a firefighter and spent 36 years of his life risking it for others and saving lives unselfishly. I never once heard him complain - not even a little. He had little children die in his arms and saw the most horrific deaths you could ever imagine ... yet he came home everyday with a smile on his face and a hug and kiss for all of us.
When he and my mom divorced he never "divorced" us. He had us whenever my mom would allow us to go. He never skipped out ... paid his child support ... and did the best he could with what he had. He married my step-mom with 3 boys and with 3 of us ... we became a regular Brady Bunch. Coming from a pretty cold and unloving home as a child he tried his hardest to love all of us the best way he knew how. He was never judgmental and loved and respected by anyone who really knew him.
The greatest thing he ever said to me was ... "I don't care if you marry someone black or white ... or if he's a garbage collector or the President. If you're happy ... he will be welcomed here."
At his memorial they shared how he was notorious for getting along with anyone. That he could bring out the best in anyone and that everyone wanted to work with him because he was the best boss you could ever ask for. When he retired ... one of his engineers simply said ... "I'd fly with you again ... anyday..."
Unfortunately, cancer doesn't care who the heroes are. It doesn't give a da*mn. But I do. My dad was my hero ... and will be ... for the rest of my life. I can't wait until the day we can all "fly with him again" and until then I know the person I am is a result of all that he was to me.
Didn't mean to write a book ... guess I needed to. Thanks for the question GEM ... the good ones are always worth repeating.
Peace ...
