We took our baby out when he was a new born still, but not in highly populated places. Than at about 1 1/2 we started taking him everywhere we went. We still cover him up from wind and stuff. If you take them around a lot of people early, they might catch something because their immune systems are not strong enough yet.

I think it would have only been about one week after my son was born that we took him out. That being said, the weather where i live was fine and sunny - theres no way i would have taken him out if it were cold or raining (or snowing, but that doesnt happen where i live!) Do what you feel comfortable with, if your husband or mum are happy to watch him for you, go on your own if thats what you prefer - it might be a nice little break for you!
I suppose too, it is hard getting around the christmas maddness with a pram, as i found out today - i could have tore my hair out lol!!

I had to take my son on his 1 week check up and he got sick right after. It was raining outside. So I waited until he was about 1 1/2 - 2 months old. I would suggest that you leave him with your husband/mom because it is winter season and you don't want to risk him getting a cold.

one week old, during the cold and flu season... I'd leave him home and just make super quick trips if I could.
I didn't have too big of a problem taking my daughter out in public from the time she was about 2 weeks, but it was mostly because that's how long it took me to walk comfortably after my csection. though we only went to church, dr's offices, and my parent's house. it was 4 weeks before I ventured out to shopping and things like that with her on my own. it was also late April / early May in Texas, so the weather was nice and usually people are not sick around here that ime of year.
babywearing and breastfeeding always made my outings easier and healthier. when you've got your baby tucked in a sling, people are not as tempted to come see or touch when they're connected to you tightly (I agree w/ the bjorn comment too)... when a baby is in a stroller, you may as well put a "come touch me, I'm cute" sign on it.

First advice, do not use a baby Bjorn. It promotes horrible posture for the poor newborn's back and hips and puts pressure on your back in all the wrong places...to where you'll be sore.
Second advice, if you are comfortable taking him out then go ahead. You can cover him up and say he's "sleeping" if anyone tries to touch him. (It is cold and flu season!)
If you are comfortable leaving him with your husband/mom, do that!

My girl was out in public in one week. You just need to make sure that you have a proper care seat installed correctly and wrap the baby according to the weather conditions. Should be fine. I always took my children out with me. I never used them as a reason not to do anything that I did before. My 5 mth old went fishing with me and loved it. My advice spend as much time with them as you can. They grow up to fast. Never miss a chance at making a memory.

My son was two days old. The only thing I could think when I got out of that hospital was real food. I think it was a mistake though because this lady got really offended when I breastfed my son even though there was a blanket covering me up. Luckily the manager of that fine establishment was a mom and told her if she didn't like it she could leave.
BTW if you are breastfeeding the baby has all of your immunities so it is safe to take the baby out. He will not get sick if you are breastfeeding. If not, with the cold and flu season in full force I would say leave him at home.

We have 4 day appointments here. And another at 2 weeks. So, I took her out at her 4 day appointment...and then we went and said hi to the people at my work...and then we went a few other places. I figured, there are plenty of germs in the hospital she was born in!
I just would make sure he/she was properly clothed, and not have a whole slew of people hold her. I think around 2 weeks I really had her with me all the time...
