At Target there is a 10 pack of little barbies from around the world of course in traditional dress. When I saw the American barbie she was blonde and wearing a cowgirl outfit. Which got me thinking. If you had to draw what Americans look like what would you draw. Americans have so many cultures I couldn't picture just one type that fits all so I want to know what you think.

Let me ask my question again.
If you had to draw an American what would they look like to you?
I'm not looking for an explanation as to why the American barbie doll is blonde and in a cow girl outfit.
Thank you to the people who have actually answered my question correctly.

Most multi-generational (white) Americans have a collection of ancestry from the following: Britain (as in from all over the islands), Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia, France.

There's a lot of room there for blonde hair and blue eyes (like me, and I'm a guy also) as you can see. However with darker hair and eyes being dominant traits, lighter traits are indeed a bit rarer (they have always been throughout history).

The reason dolls representing America have blonde hair and/or blue eyes is simply due to the fact that we are one of the countries where those rare traits exist in substantial proportions. It's much like how the Vikings are known for the axe even though their primary weapon was the sword; they were the only ones known to employ the axe so it became strongly associated with them.

Have you seen all the 10 packs of Barbies released by the company. Maybe there is some variation in the "American" dolls.

Are we to assume that you believe that the German, French, Peruvian, Japanese, etc people are exactly like the dolls that are representing the respective countries?

That sounds more like Aryan Cowboy Barbie than American Barbie.

A lot of times when you see dolls dressed up in national costumes, ours is levis (or buckskins!) and a cowboy hat and boots. The cowboy is (1) our national folk hero (2) uniquely American, and (3) a symbol recognized worldwide.

To be more realistic to America, Barbie would need to gain some weight.

All the world is multicultural, and everyone has different cultures thrown into their nationality mix. Stereotypes are a bad thing.
