i am putting together a system for my self with $600, and with that kind of money will have to go mid range with both cpu + gpu or i could chose, so should i get a E6750 core 2 duo with 2.66ghz,4mb cache, 1333bus and a nvidia 8400gs card, or should i get a dual-core 1.6 ghz,1mb cache, 800bus with a 8800gts, all i want to play is nfs prostreet, the upcoming gta4 and yea might want to play crysis on midium settings.

another question, how does the gma 3000 onboard graphics compare up to nvidia's 8400gs, if its almost the same i might be able to hold up until the 8800gtx comes down too $300. :)

If you only wish to play games, save your money and go with AMD. AMD is great for games. I prefer the Intel processors, but I am not a gamer. Everyone I know, and everything I have read states that AMD is best for gaming. With the money you save from that you should get yourself the top of the line video card. Go with one which supports direct X10, which is the best, but make sure your motherboard supports it.

I understand working on a budget. However, with the AMD, and if you can, go with an x64, which is better for gaming than a 32 bit OS. You can get a motherboard which supports both 32 bit and 64 bit OSs, and if you wished you could eventually dual boot with one of each.

For good gaming, you need three major components: Speed, Power, and Graphics. These are RAM, Processor, and graphic card(s). Many I know use two or more graphic cards, but they are the hard core gammers.

Take your time, don't be in a rush. I say this because I build my own systems now too. Watch for sales, and then you can really get the most bang for your buck. If you allow the instant gratification impulse to overcome you, you will end up with far less than you could.

I agree with what the person above me has stated except for what she says about AMD. AMD WAS the best for gaming processors, but with Intel's release of the Extreme line, AMD is getting smashed. Not to mention that the new Intel Quad is smashing the Phenom.

Conclusion:
Save your cash, buy a good processor AND a good video card.
