Basically, I'm looking for a way to get rid of a box of black powder and ammunition that we have had in our home for quite awhile. They are stored in dark, cool places right now and are not at risk of igniting, but we prefer to get rid of them to avoid the risk of setting them off later. Any ideas?

Open the black powder and pour water in the container. It will never ignite or burn after that. Go to your local Police or Sheriff's Department with the old ammo. They will dispose it for you (and no,,,you wont be in trouble for it,,,they will probably compliment you for bringing it in rather than dumping them somewhere). I hope this helps you.

If, they're even sized discs? Then smokeless. Most likely a form like Unique. If, irregular? Can be FFg black powder. Ignite a bit f a few grains. See if it puffs white and smells like rotten egg. That's black powder.

the black powder will be fine to bury in the yard

as soon as it gets wet it is just thick mud and can not burn

the shells you can give to the sheriffs or local police and they will destroy for you and they never ask questions

the black powder is also pretty cool to watch as it sparkles in a camp fire tossed in a little pinch at a time

Pop them in a box and take them down to your local recycle centre where they will put it into hazardous waste. Or go into a big field you own and set light to it all. Haharr!

that last bit was of course a joke, setting light to ammo is a very childish thing to do and your friends and teachers won't like or respect you if you do. so don't.
