My husband did this, and all he did was stick the top in some water for awhile until it developed roots. Then he put it in soil. This thing is nearly three feet tall now! He really doesn't do much in the way of nurturing - no hormones or anything, but at the end of the summer, he brings it inside and puts in his office (he works at home) and maybe all the fertilizer that comes from his phone conversations has done the trick!

You can grow it either in water(so I'm told) or soil, which is what I do.
Cut off the top of the pineapple, leave some of the fruit attached, say 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Score the underneath, like you would a ham that you wanted to bake, crisscross
If you have any rooting hormone(sold in the garden dept Wal-Mart or Home Depot) powder, rub about a 1/2 teaspoon of that on it. Place in pot with Miracle Grow soil.
Fertilize .
Water as usual
Once it has taken root you can plant it in your yard if you wish, they make nice full plants
Edit: Beings it's winter, you may want to place in a sunny window and protect it from freezing.
If you keep it as a house plant, be careful and do not overwater

I have rooted a couple, the first one was a couple years old and my greenouse heater malfunctioned and it froze. Now I have a new one and it is doing fine.
I just stuck the cut-off top into a pot of sand, kept it moist, and put it outside on the deck in the summer, and it is still green and growing some new leaves. I haven't pulled it up to see if it has roots, but I am sure it does because it is solid in the pot. It needs good drainage, is why I used the sand. I have tried potting soil before, and they just rot. Good luck with it.
Don't let your terminal do you in!

Curious Connie is right! The link below will give you complete directions for growing your own pineapple using the one you have. Since I never miss a trip out to the Dole Plantation when I make my annual trek to Honolulu I knew they had a web site with a lot of good info on it. Much Puha and Aloha to you!

Last year I bought a pineapple at the Wal-mart garden center. It was a complete pineapple with a small one growing out of the top. Racoons got it.

I have only tried once and it didn't work, but the instructions I had said something about letting it dry out a bit before planting it in soil so that it won't rot. Good luck!

I never could get one to grow, but, I once grew a Avocado tree from a seed!!! Put it in water and put 3 toothpicks in the side to keep it from falling in the water. It grew to the ceiling!

I know this can be done, but I don't know. If no one else does I'm sure you can look in up somewhere on the web. That's the great thing about a computer, you can find out almost ANYTHING !
