I recently took my violin out after about a year. My violin itself was fine, but my bow... When I played just a few songs, about 15 hairs were coming out. Whenever I keep using it, just for a few moments, more hairs start to fall out. Also, after just a couple minutes, my bow is already loosened and the hairs are just sweeping the strings, even though I tightened it to the fullest extent just moments before.

I know I will definitaly need a new bow, but why did this happen?

My daughter is having the same problem with her cello bow. The hairs are falling out but in her case, it has to do with her frequent use of it. Bows do wear out over time and need to be re-haired or replaced. If you can, you might try to find a music shop in your area that can re-hair the bow. It's cheaper than buying a new one.

Bow bugs : there is a tiny insect that eats the bow hair and this could be the problem.
It is most important that you get rid of the old bow hair ; then vacuum the violin case and leave it in the light for a few days...this will kill all the bugs. You don't want them re-infesting your new bow.
The old bow will need to be re-haired. If you had periodically open the violin case this would not have happened because the bugs hate light.

The horsehair on your bow may be falling out because a certain type of insect got into your case, layed its eggs in the horsehair and when the larvae hatched they chewed on the ends. You DO Not need to replace your bow. Just bring it to a violin shop and have it restrung.
