my 17 year old broke his radius three days ago snowboarding. he can move his arm and wrist fine without too much discomfort or pain. the x-ray didn't look to serious either. How long will this take to heal? is it better if he moves it? is it not as serious if he can move it? Would calcium pills help it repair faster?

It will heal by itself. This takes a bit of time and varies a little from person to person. Young healthy people, of course, tend to heal faster. What did the physician say about moving the arm? Is your son in a cast of some kind? There is not much evidence that calcium pills help fractures heal any faster. Nature and patience are the best healers of broken bones.

more calcium won't heal faster. (but it will insure that you are using as much calcium as you can.. other nutirients that help the absorption of calcium will assist the intake.. intaking a bunch of a mineral ain't outright good and can be toxic, calcium itself ain't that bad in high quantities, but too much of anything in the body can cause issues... getting a little extra from a calcium pill likely won't damage things though, and might actually contribute) If he isn't getting calcium intake regularly then bone strength may be low.. and healing as a result may be slow.. but the pills would benefit in that instance for sure.

there is a limit to the ammount of calcium your body can absorb. Calcium is recommended for bone health though.

It could... but it depends on other factors too

may help..

I'm not a medical doctor though, this is just my opinion not treatment.

Winter is coming or is here and still going to be here, obviously having to sit out the season would suck.. what about a cast cast to let him snow board but still protect his arm?

no?

I wouldn't move his arm much,4 it must heal. Leave his arm in the cast and give him lots of calcium. Calcium pills would help.

calcium pills would help it heal faster, also drinking lots of milk and eating veggies =)
