I set mine to 62 F, but would go lower if I didn't have plants or pets. Anything less than about 55 F, and I would think you would start losing in the heat-cost department because the furnace would be laboring constantly to bring it back up to the comfortable temp once you got home.

pretty darn low. Has to be 5 below freezing for a period to even think of freezing in ur pipes. I'd say leave it off, but then I live on an island. If your outside temp is -10C or something then stick stat on +5C. That's plenty.

40F or 5C is the usual lower limit.
But make sure the basement is also heated not sealed off.
You can also wrap the water pipes in foam sleeves.
This will save heat loss from the hot water ones too.

depends on wind rain snow ice and anything else
is the house sealed is it drafty
is the basement sealed are the vents for ventilation open or closed
it is a judgement call we rebuild houses and we leave it at 50 degrees ...works for me
